At 3pm on Sunday 26th August 2007, The 23rd Annual Warriors Run gets under way in the village of Strandhill, Co. Sligo in the northwest of Ireland. Over 400 athletes from around the country and around the world are expected to take part in the arduous 15 Kilometre road and hill race. Some are experienced athletes, veterans of the race pushing themselves to shave off minutes, even seconds off previous years times. The 2007 Warriors Festival Committee are hoping to enlist your help to clean up the area around the megalithic cairn known as Queen Maeve's Grave on top of Knocknarea Mountain.
As you may know the centuries old cairn is of immense historical and archaeological importance but unfortunately its fame has also been its downfall as some visitors to the top of the Mountain, instead of following the tradition to bring a stone from the bottom of the mountain to throw on the top of the cairn, have been removing stones from the cairn and keeping them as souvenirs or using them to write their names at its base.
On Sunday 10th June 2007, we on the Festival Committee, in conjunction with The Office of Public Works and Sligo County Council are hoping to enlist as many people as possible to help us break up the rock graffiti and return the stones to the cairn. Clean up starts from midday on.
We hope you can help out in some way on the day, if not, please pass the word along to all your family and friends.
As the Summer Festival season rapidly approaches, one of Sligo's well-known Festival groups, The Warriors Festival, kick things off with the official launch of their 2007 Festival on Saturday 26th May in Strandhill Golf Club.
On the night, the Festival committee will present details of all the events in the 2007 Festival which runs throughout the Summer months and culminates with the renowned Warriors Run at the end of August.
The launch will also be used to showcase the Festivals newly renovated website (www.warriorsfestival.com) which will go live that weekend. The website will encompass all details of the 2007 Festival and will include a new online registration system for the 23rd Annual Warriors Run, just one of many improvements being made to this unique event for 2007.
The night gets under way with a wine reception at 9.30pm and live music by The Surf Chixx's will follow the launch presentation.
